Help beat cancer at third annual Sensata Technologies 5K Road Race on June 8 to benefit Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

ATTLEBORO, Massachusetts | May 16, 2008 | People of all ages can support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and cancer research as donors and participants in the Sensata 5K Road Race and One-Mile Fun Walk/Run event on Sunday, June 8.

The theme of the event is “Walk, Run, Beat Cancer.” Even if you do not enter a race, you can contribute at the event through participating in a raffle drawing for prizes, or making a donation.

Businesses are also invited to contribute fund-raising sponsorships for the fight against cancer. Dana-Farber, a Harvard University affiliate in Boston, is a renowned treatment-and-research facility and home of the Jimmy Fund Clinic for pediatric cancer patients.

Racers and walkers will meet at the YMCA Activity Center located at the Attleboro Corporate Campus on Pleasant Street.

The one-mile race is scheduled to begin on June 8 at 9 a.m. and the 5K race is set to start at 9:45 a.m. Sensata will host an awards ceremony immediately following the second race.

The first 200 registrants in the 5k race will receive race tee shirts. Lunch will be provided to all registrants. The fee for registering for the 5k run/walk is $15 before June 6 and is $20 at the event. The fee for the one-mile race is $10. Participants can register online with PayPal by going to www.sensata5k.org and clicking on Register for the Race. Mailed entries must be received by June 2. Sensata will donate net proceeds to Dana-Farber.

This year’s Sensata 5k race is dedicated in memory of Alice Araujo, a long-time Sensata Attleboro employee who passed away from cancer last year. Many of Alice’s co-workers, family and friends will be at the race participating in her honor.

Last year, Sensata raised $10,000 for Dana-Farber. It is hoped that through the support of local businesses, race participants and raffles, this year’s event will reflect an increase in total donations.

Bring the whole family
Sensata will also hold 25-, 50-, and 100-yard dashes for children beginning at 11 a.m. behind the YMCA center. All children in these dashes will receive ribbons.  In addition to the races, there will be children’s activities provided by YMCA staff including an inflatable bounce house and live music provided by Bob Travers’ Odyssey and the Sensata Band All-Stars.

Awards for top men, women, youths
The top three 5K finishers in each of these age divisions will receive awards:

  • male and female runners 18 and younger;
  • 19 through 39;
  • 40 through 49;
  • 50 through 59;
  • 60 and older;
  • Clydesdale (male runners over 190 pounds); and
  • filly (female runner over 140 pounds).

Sensata will also present awards for the 5k event to the: best overall male and female runners; first male and female wheelchair finishers; and first male and female Sensata finishers.

This year the race will include a corporate competition where the top three corporate teams will receive an award.

For the one-mile event, Sensata will present awards to the top three male and female adults (18 and older) and the top three males and females in divisions for ages: 8 and younger, 9 and 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 14, and 15 through 17.
