Sensata Technologies sensors provide new level of control and precision for engine control
Fuel economy and improved engine performance driven by new sensor technologies

DETROIT, Michigan and SAE 2007 World Congress Booth #2318 | Optimizing engine performance, from fuel delivery to enhancing advanced engine control systems, is the core value of the portfolio of sensor products that Sensata Technologies is demonstrating at the SAE World Congress this year.

Gasoline Direct Injection Sensor

Significant fuel economy improvements of 4-8% can be achieved by new multi-port fuel injection systems that create air and fuel mixtures at the fuel intake valve rather than in the combustion cylinder. Regulating the amount of fuel coming into the intake value under higher pressures requires the high precision sensing available with Sensata Technologies’ Gas Direct Injection sensor. This sensor employs an advanced Monocrystalline, piezo-resistive strain gauge (MSG) pressure sensor to optimize an efficient air/fuel mixture over a range of gasoline and diesel fuels, and across a wide temperature range.

Liquid Fuel Pressure Sensor (LFS)

Today’s vehicles require precise pressure sensing between the fuel source and fuel injectors to optimize both fuel economy and increase fuel pump life. Sensata Technologies’ Liquid Fuel Pressure sensor (LFS) employ ceramic capacitive–based technologies that are offered in a variety of package options including pump integrated mounting. The sensor regulates pump pressure in line with the demands of the engine, even in cold-weather starts.

Displacement on Demand and Oil Pressure Sensing

SIn a major step toward improved fuel economy, with some estimates as high as 15 percent, many manufacturers are offering engines with cylinder deactivation systems which deactivate some cylinders under light load conditions such as level highway driving. Monitoring oil pressure is a key indicator for these systems. Sensata Technologies’ APT and APSquared™ oil pressure sensors give accurate, direct linear voltage output to these systems, as well as provide vital oil level input to protect the engine from low-oil conditions.

Fuel Level Sensor

Sensata’s Non-Contacting Fuel Level Sensor (FLS) offers a wear-free option for today’s fuel systems and presents superior resistance to biofuels. The sensor features a patent pending angular position design and uses commercially available Hall sensors. It is available in a range of interface options: PWM current and analog Voltage with a LIN bus interface (under development).

Also under development is a float-less, non-contacting fuel level sensor. Unlike conventional sensors it does not require a float arm and has no moving parts, hence it avoids the wear problems associated with potentiometer solutions while offering precise measurement in low fuel conditions.

"Finding new solutions for fuel economy is an ongoing challenge for the automotive industry," said Kari Caesar, market segment manager at Sensata Technologies. "Providing precision input for these advanced fuel and performance systems through our portfolio of sensor products helps our customers develop new engineering solutions."

Transmission Efficiency Solutions

Sensata Technologies is also highlighting its Internal Mode Switch (IMS) and Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) featuring multi-bit logic technology which more accurately communicates gear and transmission state input to the transmission control module.
